WHAT’S THE SCORE – GUEST GEORGE CLINTON
In part two of our conversation with Composer George Clinton, we explore little-heard scores of his that weren’t widely heard because the movie didn’t perform well. Additionally, we look at examples of rejected scores from Composers such as North, Hermann, Barry and Clinton. George’s rejected score for Scary Movie 2 has its world premiere on the program, along with some interesting stories on each rejected score. Fascinating insight along with great music!

With over 40 scores to his credit, John Altman has had a distinguished career, not only in film music but also as an arranger, songwriter and musician. In this episode, John shares his favourite scores by other composers as well as a few favorites of his own. He shares some interesting behind-the-scenes tales on scoring and provides a fascinating account of his work on the James Bond Film “Goldeneye”.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO SIR ROGER MOORE
This week marks the 2nd anniversary of the passing of an international superstar, Sir Roger Moore. 2 years ago, I put together this tribute using music from his films/TV shows. Of course, the classic songs from the Bond films are featured but also music from The Saint, The Persuaders and Gold among others. Composers such as John Barry and Elmer Bernstein contribute to this terrific collection. Sit back and re-live some terrific TV shows and films which starred this fine actor and humanitarian.

You may not know the name, but you’ll know his work. He is the founder of Film Score Monthly and has produced over 250 CDs of rare and previously unreleased film scores. He has many fascinating stories about what it took to get so many scores released to the delight of film music fans. A two-part episode, this episode focuses on his work on various scores he was instrumental in getting released, and he chooses he all time favorite scores/cues.

In part 2 of our conversation, we focus on the work Lukas did to bring the James Bond scores back to life with remastered CDs AND putting previously unreleased music on most of the scores. A fascinating tale of determination, good luck and passion which made it possible. A hero to many Bond fans and John Barry fans, Lukas shares in this episode not only what it took to get it done but also features some of Lukas’s favourite cues (coupled with a couple of mine). Kevin Sampson is a writer, producer, and director, and he’s taken that experience and applied it to his primary role as a film critic. He also runs an entertainment website, hosts a podcast and a film review TV show. As if that wasn’t enough, he launched a PR firm called “Picture Lock” to help independent filmmakers, with a focus on filmmakers of colour. As you would expect, he has chosen a wide variety of scores ranging from the 1950’s to the present day. Some will be familiar, and others won’t be, but you’re sure to enjoy it all. A fascinating discussion on all things film, plus some great music, makes this an episode not to be missed.

Our guest is film/TV composer Jason Frederick. His work ranges from commercials to Disney projects on TV to feature films. Based in the UK, this Canadian also has a blog on film scoring, and his upcoming projects include a score for a silent film, which we talk about. His choices are mostly scores from pre 1980 and include a couple of surprise choices from TV. Interesting conversation on film scoring and some great music!

Raymond Benson is a prolific author with over 40 books to his name. While his 5 part serial called “The Black Stiletto” was an acclaimed hit, he is probably best known as the third official author of the James Bond continuation novels. In addition to writing, he is a noted film historian who provides the most wide-ranging selection of composers yet. On this episode of What’s the Score, we welcome Ajay Chowdhury. Ajay was born in London and read Law at university there and in the Netherlands. For over two decades, Ajay has consulted on various motion picture, music, publishing, television and theatrical projects. Ajay has been involved with British and European feature film production in various capacities. He was the associate producer on two feature films, ‘Lost Dogs’ (2005) and ‘Flirting With Flamenco’ (2006). Ajay has been an Advisory Board member on the Tongues On Fire Film Festival. In 2015, he co-wrote the internationally bestselling, ground-breaking Some Kind of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films with Matthew Field, published by The History Press. The book was updated in paperback to cover The Road To Bond 25 and published in August 2018, which features extensive coverage on the soundtracks and songs of the 007 movies. In these troubled times, it’s good to have distractions, so great film music and conversation are just what the doctor ordered. To celebrate our 1-year anniversary of What’s the Score, we have assembled some highlights from past shows, both stories and music. I couldn’t include everyone I wanted, and I remain grateful for all my guests. Canadian Saul Pincus joins us to discuss filmmaking, roles of Directors/Editors around music and of course, some of his favourite scores. He is an accomplished director and editor, having worked on numerous projects. He also collaborated with Directing legend Sidney J Furie on several projects. We have a wide-ranging discussion on many aspects of filmmaking, in addition to some great music from the golden age to the present day. He’s also produced several documentaries for Film Score Monthly, so you know he knows his stuff!

He has enjoyed a successful career as a portrait photographer, where he did headshots for actors in L.A., and currently sells high-end real estate in Southern California. His journey to our program is because he has become a popular podcaster on film music, namely music from James Bond films. A celebration of the life and career of one of cinema’s music giants, Ennio Morricone, who died this July. From the earliest years of the career of John Barry, our guest Ian McDonald followed his every move practically so he could know what the next great score would be. As a result, he has amazing knowledge of the composer, coupled with terrific stories of his adventures as a groupie. Lee Chambers is a professor of film in Canada but has also managed to be involved in over 2000 short films. He’s been a juror for numerous film festivals around the world. He’s also managed to win several awards for his writing and directing. His first feature he directed is out now on Amazon called “The Pineville Heist”.

Lee Holdridge is our guest for our next episode. He has written for short films, theatre, and opera before becoming prolific in composing scores and arranging for solo artists. His scores include Mr. Mom, Splash, The Beastmaster, and TV shows such as Into Thin Air, East of Eden and Moonlighting ( he wrote the popular theme tune for this). Our discussion was wide-ranging and fascinating as we discussed his work with Neil Diamond, John Denver, as well as the scores he wrote. The stories were free and led to a great conversation coupled with some of his terrific compositions.

We talk a lot about storytelling. And we even learn some deeply personal things about this amazing man.

We have a returning guest for a good reason. Warren Ringham’s Q the Music band has done an unprecedented series of videos that are concerts of music from the James Bond films. Their ability to precisely recreate the cues from the scores of the films are….unbelievable. You must hear to believe. TRIBUTE FOR SIR SEAN CONNERY
In a career that spanned over 4 decades, Sir Sean Connery established himself as an actor with an incredible range. While he will always be known as “James Bond”, his credits over his career showed an actor capable of so much more. In addition to the Bond films, his other films included such diverse topics as The Hill, The Wind and the Lion, The Man Who Would Be King, Robin and Marion, Outland, The Untouchables (won Oscar for best Supporting Actor), The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, and so many more. In honour of his life, we play cues from his films that feature composers such as Jerry Goldsmith, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Morricone and John Barry. Join us for a trip down memory lane as we celebrate the career of Sir Sean Connery.

Our guest, Eimear Noone is an award-winning composer for film and video games. She is viewed as one of the world’s premier composers for video games, for such games as World of Warcraft. For films, she has worked with directors such as Gus Van Sant and Joe Dante. Her talents include being an in-demand conductor, as evidenced by becoming the first female conductor to perform at the 2020 Academy Awards. She has some great choices of favourite scores and we hear some of her work as well for her latest film, TWO BY TWO OVERBOARD.

Our guest, Steve Rubin, is a producer, writer and author. His accomplishments are many, but I know him as the author of an outstanding book, The James Bond Film Encyclopedia. The book has just been updated and is a must-have for Bond fans and film fans. Other works include the Twilight Zone Encyclopedia. He is a lover of film, especially those made in the 50’s through 70’s. You’ll hear great cues from the early masters of film scores and fascinating discussion on the history of cinema.
MEGA FILM MUSIC FAN TONY WEEKS
Occasionally, I like to feature those among us who are huge fans of film music that have a great knowledge and appreciation of the craft. This episode is an example. Tony Weeks is, in my opinion, an expert in film music though he has no official “title” as such. A nurse by trade, he has spent his entire life collecting, admiring and listening to great film scores. His selections will bear that out. WHO WROTE THE JAMES BOND THEME?
Our most ambitious episode ever. I’ve assembled three knowledgeable people to discuss, dissect and inform on the fascinating story of the theme’s authorship. It’s not as straightforward as you may think. We don’t aim to change the official record but rather provide a backdrop into the composing of one of cinema’s most famous pieces of music. We talk about the events of 1962 when the theme was being developed for the first Bond film, “Dr. No”. Also discussed are possible influences for the theme. We then dive into the lawsuit led by composer Monty Norman against the Sunday Times, which claimed John Barry had written the theme. All angles and opinions are explored to give the listener a comprehensive view of this controversial topic. I never thought I would do this many shows. I thought it appropriate to have a retrospective for our 100th. It was hard to choose highlights, but I’ve tried to select ones that had interesting discussions.
