IN THE SPOTLIGHT | RE-RECORDING BERNSTEIN

Ten years ago this month legendary composer Elmer Bernstein passed away at the age of 82. A few days after his passing we produced a three hour tribute to Bernstein music, which you can still listen to HERE!

This week on the CINEMATIC SOUND SPOTLIGHT we will be listening to select re-recordings of music composed by Elmer Bernstein including for the very first time on the show music from the landmark ELMER BERNSTEIN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION.

Listen to the entire show below.

AUGUST 18, 2014 – We begin with selections from the 1961 western, THE COMANCHEROS.  This film marked the first of eight collaborations between legendary actor John Wayne and Bernstein.

This superb re-recording was produced by Varese Sarabande Records featuring the Utah Symphony Orchestra recorded by Bruce Leek.

AUGUST 19, 2014 – For the first time in CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO history we will be playing music from the ELMER BERNSTEIN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION.  The second album in the series, released in 1974 and re-released by Film Score Monthly as part of a lavish 11 CD box set, featured music from 1959 film, THE MIRACLE.  Bernstein conducted a 26 minute plus suite for this album with members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The original soundtrack recording has subsequently been released by Intrada Records.

AUGUST 20, 2014 – RE-RECORDING BERNSTEIN continues with music from one of my most cherished albums – Varese Sarabande Records re-recording of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

The album was recorded in 1996 with Bernstein conducting members of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra beautifully captured by recording engineer Jonathan Allen.

AUGUST 21, 2014 – Up next is music from the 1963 adventure KINGS OF THE SUN. In 2003 Bernstein recorded this album with the City of Prague Philharmonic for release on his very own label. Unfortunately, Bernstein passed away before releasing the album.  The album sat on the shelf until James Fitzpatrick voluteered his time to assemble the album for Film Score Monthly’s monumental re-release of the ELMER BERNSTEIN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION in 2006.

AUGUST 22, 2014 – CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’S SPOTLIGHT on RE-RECODING BERNSTEIN wraps up with a suite of music from four films scored by Elmer Bernstein.  The suite opens with music from THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and then moves onto the tender theme from the film DA.  The suite continues with the gorgeous waltz from THE AGE OF INNOCENCE and ends with two tracks from CAST A GIANT SHADOW.
