EP. 25 | PETE’S DRAGON, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, SAUSAGE PARTY & MORE SOUNDTRACKS

On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, we’ll be featuring music from six brand new scores. We open with music from one of the finest scores of the year, PETE”S DRAGON by Daniel Hart. You’ll also hear brand new music from the Netflix TV series STRANGER THINGS by Kyle Dixon, and Michael Stein. THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS features one of Alexandre Desplat’s best scores. Christopher Lennertz and Alan Menken scores the R-rated animated feature SAUSAGE PARTY.  65daysofstatic’s sound design score to the video game NO MAN’S SKY is our video game score of the week. And Naoki Sato provides outstanding music for the Japanese TV series, MORIBITO: GUARDIAN OF THE SPIRIT.

Our John Williams album of the week is a 2007 recording of a three piece suite from MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

And we pay tribute to legendary harmonica player Toots Thielemans, who passed away last week at the age of 94.  You’ll hear four scores featuring performances by Thielemans including MIDNIGHT COWBOY by John Barry, CINDERELLA LIBERTY by John Williams, INTERSECTION by James Newton Howard and HARD RAIN by Christopher Young.

Here is my extended commentary of the STRANGER THINGS score.

Loving these WROCK shows… congrats on reaching number 25!

Re: Stranger Things… The John Carpenter/Tang D/Moroder synth music lover in me is still pretty happy with the Stranger Things score, but you’re not wrong… the Duffer Bros missed an opportunity to create an extra special score that blends the horror synth with Wiliiams/Horner orchestral magic in the same way the show brilliantly combined the Spielbergian kid-hero genre with the Carpenter/Stephen King horror elements.

As an 80s kid, I’m enjoying the synthpop revival going on right now, but I do think that, while the modern synthpop artists get the sound right, very few capture the melodic ‘je ne se qua’ a lot of the original synth artists of yore captured.
