EP. 20 | ICE AGE COLLISION COURSE, THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS, LIGHTS OUT & MORE

On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO we’ll be featuring music from three brand new film scores. We open the program with music from John Debney’s score to ICE AGE COLLISION COURSE featuring previous thematic material by David Newman and John Powell.  You’ll also hear music from THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS by Alexandre Desplat and LIGHTS OUT by Benjamin Wallfisch.

Our John Williams album of the week is his 1998 updated CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN AND ORCHESTRA.

Our re-recording of the week comes from Film Score Month’s outstanding re-release of the Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection. You’ll hear Bernstein’s recording of Bernard Herrmann’s 1966 rejected score to TORN CURTAIN

Our weekly video game selection comes from an album called SYMPHONIC SHADES, which presents a 2008 live recording of a video game concert featuring the music of Chris Huelsbeck.

Our film music vault selection is Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award winning score to THE OMEN, which turns 40 years old this month

And we’ll celebrate the 20th anniversary of three films with music from COURAGE UNDER FIRE by James Horner, A TIME TO KILL by Elliot Goldenthal and THE FRIGHTENERS by Danny Elfman.

SYMPHONIC SHADES – something I’d never heard of before this – sounds absolutely fantastic. Great to hear THE OMEN get highlighted, as I maintain it’s still the greatest horror score ever written.

I couldn’t be happier that you discovered SYMPHONIC SHADES though my program. As for THE OMEN, I wanted to play it this week to contrast it to the LIGHTS OUT score, which is so bland. I guess it wasn’t fair to put LIGHTS OUT up against THE OMEN but it just goes to show that you can be creative in the horror genre and THE OMEN should one of the first places composers go for inspiration.
