EP. 16 | MORE MUSIC OF JAMES HORNER PART 1

On June 22, 2015, the world lost one of its greatest film music heroes. James Horner was only 61 one when he lost control of his S-312 Tucano MK1 turboprop and crashed 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

James Horner’s loss was devastating. He was part of a holy trinity of film composers I grew up admiring. The others were John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I never thought that the day would come where only one of them would still be standing.

Horner, a two-time Academy Award winner, six-time Grammy winner and IFMCA Award winner, had an uncanny knack for perfectly capturing the emotional core of a film with his patented musical textures and harmonies, which is still unmatched in film today. His list of legendary scores seems almost endless, however, on today’s program, and on the one-year anniversary of his passing, we here at Cinematic Sound Radio will be presenting a special two-part, four-hour tribute to James Horner and his lesser known scores.

On this first program, you’ll hear music from such films as THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN, DAD, DEEP IMPACT, BEYOND BORDERS and more.  The full playlist is below. Listen to part 2 HERE.

And I want to thank again Cinematic Sound Radio composer, David Coscina, for his short tribute piece to James Horner, which he wrote last year.  You will hear at the top of each part of the show.  You can listen to the entire piece below.

    Hi!
The price / the award that was the most important to James Horner personally was the MAX STEINER AWARD for his life work in Vienna 2013 (on October 4th 2013). Varese Sarabande released that fantastic evening with 60 minutes of James Horners music on June, 24th 2016 as a Region free bluray!!! Horner was very touched. Many tears he had on that great evening in Vienna. In the middle of Hollywood in Vienna 2015 there was a piano Solo with Roses theme from titanic for remember James Horner.
Thanks for your show and hopefully you will present some of the best Tracks from the underrated movie and score to “The 33” (2015)! I think, James Horners beautiful score with Tony Hinnigan at the flutes to “The 33” deserves a presentation on your second part!

Early on, one could easily tell that this composer was destined to be one of the greatest. His music had the special magic that only exists in consummate artistry …….James’ loss was a shock. I’ve studied film music for 64 years and would call him one of the ten greatest talents of the art.
